sConsidering the amount of articles, pictures and offerings we see on social media, we would like to clary few things around the so called Chocolate Chow Chow.
The Chocolate Chow is an extreme dilution of Fawn (with some influx of the B gene - recessive b from Black) and it manifests with a brown coat all over, pink palate, pink gums and pink internal mucose. Their nose, like the rest of the body, lacks in pigment, appearing light and fading more with the years.
Although we put no judgment on chocolate chows (all living creature are a blessing), we do firmly discourage the breeding (and profiting) of such type of Chows.
Chocolate chows are not in standard, so no pedigree is admissible per se. This means we can't trace back their genealogy, unless there have been manipulation into their writings (for example, registering them as fawn). Chocolate Chows are NOT RECOGNISED as in standard ANYWHERE in the WORLD.
Chocolate Chows are defective in pigmentation. Low pigmentation is also associated with other genetic defects, usually co-related with problems at the eyes, bones and coat.
There are 5 Chow Chow standard accepted colours in the world. Black, Blue, Red, Fawn (or Cinnamon) and Cream. These 5 colours are associated with healthy, high standard type of dogs. Why would anybody "experiment" and cross breed in order to push a mutation in the bloodline? With the risk of bringing other genetic risks? Without being able to get a honest, legal pedigree? Why would anybody do that?
MONEY. The only reason is Money. Chocolate Chows are sold as rarity and at astonishing price like 3000 to 8000£ (not Euro, Pounds!).
So please, be aware. We don't breed or recommend Chocolate Chows!
This is some special work I did couple of years ago after spending a lot of time studying researches out there on Color Genetics for Chow Chows.
As you probably know, Chows don't transmit colors like other breeds and research in this field still continue
However, based on what is available out there and on experience, here below the possible combination based on parents genes.
Keep in mind few rules:
Chow Chow Ireland
As explained above, Cream Color Chows (not light red!!) have the peculiarity to override all the other genes because their coat mutation depends on a different set of genes.
Chows are cream when the E gene is double e/e. This will hide all the other genes. Cream Color parents (not light red!!) can then generate ANY color based on the set of genes they are hiding.
Although this double letter e/e, is still recessive, Cream Parents won't generate only Cream pups
For these reason, you will see behind 4 types of Cream where the Pup is cream but secretly brings 4 types of combinations (our Cream girl Arya, had 2 Black pups as proof of it!)
One last thing!!
Cream Chows can look identical of Very Light Red Chows (diluted red). If this is the case, pups will match the RED + other colors and NOT Cream and other color!
